ルイス・キャロルは19世紀英国の数学者、大学講師、児童文学作家、写真家。本名は、チャールズ・ラトウィッジ・ドジソン。ペンネームは本名のアナグラムとなっている。キャロルはオックスフォードのクライストチャーチ校に通い、そのままオックスフォード大学の数学教師となった。アリスのモデルは、アリス・リデルという少女で、彼女の父ヘンリー・リデルはオックスフォード大学の学長だった。キャロルは上司リデルと同じく学内の寮に暮らしていたため、リデルの家族とは親交が深かった。
ある日、キャロルはイーディス、アリス、ロリーナのリデル三姉妹とボート遊びをする。このボート上で姉妹にねだられ話した即興話が『不思議の国のアリス』のもとになる物語だった。キャロルが「それでは話はまた次の機会に」と言うと、三姉妹は「その次の機会は今でしょ！」と答え、キャロルは泣く泣く話を捻り出し語ったという。そして、この時間をキャロルは「ゴールデン・アフタヌーン（黄金の午後）」と呼んだ。アリス執筆に至るこの経緯については、彼の日記に詳細に綴られている。
だが、ひとつ不可解なことがある。キャロルはゴールデン・アフタヌーンと呼んだこの日を日記内で晴天の午後の思い出として語っているが、英国政府が公式に発表している天気は雨で、とてもボート遊びができるような日ではなかった。キャロルの単純な日付間違いや思い込みななのか、それともこのエピソードさえ彼の創作なのか、その不可解な謎についてはいまだ解決してない。とはいえ、アリスが今でも世界中の人に愛される名作であることに変わりはない。そうした謎もまた、人々を惹きつけ続ける魅力のひとつであるのかもしれない。
