明治4年5月10日に交付された新貨幣条例により日本は金本位制に移行。だが、金地金の準備は不十分で開始から間もない明治11年5月27日に金銀本位制に、同年11月26日には銀本位制に転換した。その間、欧米列強をはじめとした諸外国は金本位制を採用していったため、余剰となった銀売却で銀価格が急落。また、円安輸入品の急騰によって激しいインフレが巻き起こった。
この動向を危惧し、日本国内では金本位制への回帰が再度議論されたが、金地金の不足で実現は叶わずにいた。そんな中、明治27年に日清戦争が勃発し、これに勝利する。日本は賠償金の支払いを金貨のみにすると定め、これを元手に明治30年、金本位制がようやく実現した。
明治4年時の金銀比率は1対16.71だったが、明治27年時は1対32.56と約1/2になっていたため、明治30年の金本位制では同額面でも量目は半分に設計された。そのため、旧20円金貨は金品位.900の量目33.33gだったが、新20円金貨では金品位.900の量目16.66ｇという仕様になっている。
新20円金貨は旭日に植物装飾というシンプルなデザインながら、その造り込みは極めて繊細で、国内外ともに多くのファンを有している。明治・大正期の日本が生んだマスターピース。
