「AN XI」というラテン語は革命歴11年目の意で、西暦に換算で1802年を意味する。
1802年は執政政府時代と呼ばれ、ナポレオンを筆頭に3人の執政官によってフランスが統治された時代を指す。1793年にルイ16世が処刑され、ブルボン朝による支配が終わり、ロベスピエールを筆頭とする総裁政府が置かれた。だが、テルミドールのクーデタによりロベスピエールが処刑され、総裁政府は早々に崩れた。その後、ナポレオンが台頭し、執政政府を樹立する。本作はその際に発行されたもので、皇帝を宣言する前の共和国時代のもののため、ナポレオンの肖像に冠は描かれていない。
