誰もが知るローマの英雄カエサルが発行したデナリウス銀貨。打倒ポンペイウスのために造られた軍用貨で、カエサル発行コインの代表格。悠久の歴史の風を感じられる名作中の名作で痺れる。
Ch-VF, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 4/5と申し文ないグレードの上、数値には顕れない味わい深いブルートーンものっており、そのトーンが図像の立体感をより引き立てている。
約8年間に亘るガリア戦争を終結させたガイウス・ユリウス・カエサルは、大勝利の末、莫大な戦利品と軍からの熱烈な支持を得る。だが、カエサルに権力が集中してしまったことを恐れたローマ政府は、カエサルの帰国を恐れるようになる。政敵による策略から、無事に帰国できないことを察したカエサルは、武装を解かずにルビコン川を渡る決断をする。ローマ市内では安全上の都合から武装してはいけない掟があり、対外遠征から帰還する際、軍は武装解除するのが習わしだった。それゆえ、カエサルのこの掟破りは事実上の宣戦布告となった。
だが、カエサルがローマに帰還すると意外なことに敵対する元老院派の主流メンバーは亡命しており、ポンペイウスも東方で挙兵して迎撃の準備をしていた。本品はカエサルが行軍中、ポンペイウスを追撃する遠征の道中で発行したもので、兵士への給与支払い及び物資調達を目的に造られた。象と蛇、「CAESAR」という大きな名前の刻印、裏側には神官の儀具が描かれている。象と蛇は打倒ポンペイウスを意識したもので、圧倒的軍事力を持つカエサル（象）が、ポンペイウス（蛇）を叩き潰すことを象徴する挑発の図柄で、カエサルの高いセンスが窺える。自分を巨大な象に喩え、ポンペイウスを小さな蛇に喩えることで、力の差を明確に表現している。
ローマでは権力が一人に集中することを避けるため、存命中の個人の肖像を貨幣に描くことが禁じられていた。この頃のカエサルはそのルールに従い、自分を象の姿で表現している（後に自分の肖像入り貨幣を発行するが、それを機に暗殺される）。象は戦場で大いなる力を発揮する動物で、百獣の王である獅子をも凌駕する動物として当時認識されていた。すなわち、自分を象に喩えることは王に値する人物であることも象徴しているわけである。蛇は古くから悪の象徴とされる動物ゆえ、敵対するポンペイウスを蛇で表現した。
裏側の神官の儀具は、カエサルが最高神祇官（ポンティフェクス・マクシムス）の役職にあったことを意味するもので、最高神祇官はローマ宗教の最高官職にあたる。カエサルは日頃から、自身がこの役職に就いていることを誇りに思っていた。というのも、カエサルはガリア遠征での成功以前はあまり大した業績がなかったこともあり、最高神祇官の役職は彼にとって、ローマ政界でのキャリアを誇示するほとんど唯一の業績だった背景がある。
