ホルスはオシリスとイシスの息子。温厚で聡明なオシリスと異なり、ホルスは短気で粗野な性格だった。オシリスが悪神セトに暗殺されると、ホルスは王位継承権を巡って彼と争った。最終的にはホルスが勝利し、地上はホルスが支配することになった。セトは世界の創造主ラーと共に太陽の舟に乗り、悪神アポピスの討伐の役目を担うことになった。
この神話は古代エジプトの第3中間期に成立したもので、ギリシアの著述家プルタルコスによって現在にも伝えられている。第3中間期以前はセトは悪神ではなく、むしろ王を守護する嵐の神として祀られ、彼の名にあやかり、第19王朝ではセティと名乗るファラオもいた。
ホルスは亡きオシリスの後を継いでファラオに君臨した後、愛の女神ハトホルを娶り、彼女との間にイムセティ、ドゥアムトエフ、ケベフセヌエフ、ハピの4柱の息子をもうけた。
ホルスはエジプトを形成した9柱神には含まれない第5世代の新興神だが、長きに亘ってエジプトを統治し、紀元前3000年頃にナルメルという戦士に王位を譲り渡し、天界に戻った。こうして神が人間を統治する時代から、人間が人間を統治する時代に変わったと伝承されている。
